![]() ![]() At the beginning of the war many musketeers carried a forked stick or rest to help support the musket an aid accuracy, but these were soon abandoned. As the war went on the matchlock was increasingly replaced by the more reliable ‘firelock’ or flintlock musket, which used a piece of flint striking a steel in the mechanism to create sparks, igniting the priming charge.Ī musket could hit and kill a person at up to 300 yards but was inaccurate at anything over 50 yards, hence musketeers being gathered together to fire in massed volleys to create a hail of lead that was bound to hit an opponent. The musket most commonly used was the matchlock, which was fired by touching off a priming charge with a piece of burning slow-match cord. Musketeers were armed with a musket, a simple firearm around 4.5 feet (1.4 metres) in length which fired a lead musket ball weighing about 2/3 oz (18g) using a gunpowder charge. They were formed into blocks of men that could present a forest of pikes to an opponent, ‘charged’ or levelled against the face against other infantry, or more importantly form a hedgehog of pikes or ‘schiltron’ which musketeers could crouch and shelter under to defend against a cavalry charge. They were armed with a short sword for hand-to-hand fighting, and a pike, a spear 16 to 18 feet (4.7 – 5.5 metres) in length, made of ash with an iron spear head. As it was quite cumbersome, this was rapidly abandoned, and for much of the war most pikemen would have little more than a helmet to protect them. ![]() For most of the war there would be two musketeers for every pikeman, and by its end the New Model Army perhaps had a ratio of 3 or 4 musketeers to a pikeman.Īt the beginning of the war many pikemen were equipped with armour, usually a back and breastplate and often thigh plates or ‘tassets’. Infantry regiments usually had two types of soldier: pikemen and musketeers. In battle, each regiment would be formed up with a block of pikemen in the centre and equal bodies of musketeers on either flank. In reality, with a lack of recruits, most regiments were between 400 – 600 men. Infantrymen were organised in regiments commanded by a colonel, with each regiment sub-divided into ten or twelve companies of 100 men, each with its own flag or colour. The Cromwell Museum displays examples of the sorts of equipment carried by soldiers during the English Civil War, some from our own collections and others kindly loaned to us by the Royal Armouries. Others figures such as Oliver Cromwell had little or no experience at the start of the war and had to learn by experience. Some senior officers on both sides, such as Prince Rupert or Sir Thomas Fairfax, had gained prior military experience in the Thirty Years’ War on the Continent. As the wars went on, both sides introduced conscription, which was extremely unpopular and many men deserted. As such, both Royalists and Parliamentarians had to ask for volunteers to fill their armies, though many noblemen who raised regiments forced their tenants and servants to join up. Every county had a local militia or ‘Trained Bands’ that could be called up in time of war, but many of these split between the different sides. The last time that the country had experienced anything close to a full scale war had been the threat of the Spanish Armada 70 years before. There were no permanent armies in Britain when the English Civil War started in 1642.

![]() ![]() Phil Spencer: So it's a good thread to pull on this one. Was there ever a moment where Microsoft was like, Age and the real-time-strategy genre is done? And then, the second part of that is, when and what turned it around? When you were like, wow, this is worth paying attention to again? But I think there was definitely a gap, for both real-time strategy and Age of Empires, where it didn’t look good. You’ve seen this evolution of the franchise. WIRED: So it's the 25th anniversary of Age of Empires, and I know, Phil, you've been with Microsoft for more than 30 years. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Combining strengthening and stretching exercises for tight hamstrings and calves, glutes, and hip flexors, and reducing the time you spend sitting down, will help to combat the muscle imbalances and postural problems that lead to tight hamstrings. Unfortunately, fixing tight hamstrings involves more than an occasional stretch now and then. Stretching, foam rolling and myofascial release can be great tools if your hamstring tightness is a result of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) but if the tight feeling is a result of an exercise induced injury, you’ll need to rest up and consider speaking to a physiotherapist. Your hamstring muscles are fundamental for many different types of exercise, such as running, cycling, lifting, and many other sports, so it’s easily done if you don’t properly plan in recovery time and rest days too. Improving your posture, stretching your hip flexors, and strengthening your hamstrings and glutes can help to combat APT and the accompanying hamstring tightness.Įxercising too much, or increasing how much exercise you do too quickly, can lead to muscle delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), muscle tightness and in some cases injury. One of the main causes of excessive anterior pelvic tilt is – you guessed it – excessive sitting throughout the day, causing tight hip flexors which pull your pelvis forward. Having an excessive anterior pelvic tilt (APT), a common posture where the pelvis is rotated forward, causes the hip flexors to shorten and the hamstrings to lengthen, resulting in overstretched and weak hamstrings. Poor posture can also lead to an imbalance between the hamstrings and other muscles. Stretching the hamstrings will help to relieve stiffness caused by muscle imbalances but you will also need to strengthen both the hamstrings (to increase endurance) and the surrounding muscles (to combat the imbalance) to fix this issue permanently. Weak hip flexors and calves can also lead to the hamstring needing to work harder when moving to compensate for these imbalances. So, if you spend a lot of your day sat down your hamstring muscles will have to overcompensate. This means that when you do exercises that usually engage your glutes they won’t activate as much as they should, leaving your surrounding muscles to pick up the slack. If you’re sat down for hours every day, your hamstrings are constantly held in that shortened state which can cause tightness, stiffness and even a posterior pelvic tilt, which can lead to lower back and knee pain.Ĭhanging positions throughout the day, including switching from sitting to standing, adding in dynamic stretches, and strengthening your hamstrings and glutes, will help combat tightness.ĭid you know that the term ‘use it or lose it’ is true when it comes to your muscles? If you find yourself sitting for extended periods, your glute muscles can become weaker and lazy. When we are sat down with our knees bent, our hamstring muscles are held in a shortened position. Sitting down for extended periods can cause the hamstrings to feel tight. There are multiple factors that can lead to tight hamstrings, but typically these fall under: long periods of sitting, and overexercising. ![]() Tight muscles can be caused by several things, including: When someone complains of having tight muscles, they are referring to a feeling of stiffness or pain which may prevent them from making certain movements. What does having a “tight” muscle actually mean? They also help to assist the glutes in any hip hinge movements, and they play a role in your posture too. These three muscles sit at the back of your leg and are largely responsible for knee movements such as walking, running, and jumping. Tight hamstrings are a really common issue as both activity and inactivity can lead to stiff, sore hamstrings – which means no one is safe! Whether you are highly active, completely sedentary, or somewhere in between, if you’re dealing with tight hamstrings, this article will help.Īlthough it sounds like one muscle, the hamstring is made up of three muscles, the Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus, and the Biceps Femoris which has both a short and long head. Struggling with tight hamstrings? You’re not alone. ![]() ![]() It’s been cool to see all of the people online using the tilt offsets to further push the barrier of what’s possible with the Movi Pro.” They delivered an incredible design and finished product that has made flying heavy lenses a breeze. Make sure that turntable on offer for £200 isn’t shifting for £50 a pop elsewhere. Don’t be conned into paying over the odds. Firstly, do some research about the state of current prices. It is true that you can grab some startling bargains on the vintage circuit with beautifully engineered turntables going cheap but bear in mind a couple of things. Focus first on the Bonewalkers (use Leon, Conrad, plus anyone using Seraphim), but keep your low-defense mages back if you have to, as they aren’t likely to survive the first enemy turn. This is the toughest fight in the Tower yet, featuring five level 20 Bonewalkers, plus three level 10 Necrodragons and a handful of Bow Knights. You’ll find more Mana Herbs, and a Bow Knight blocking the stairs to the fourth and final floor. Continue north along this forked-off passage for more supplies (Mana Herbs, Butter, Silver Coins), then double back and continue north along the main path. The Barons and Dread Fighters are susceptible to magic, as always (especially those to whom physical attacks won’t do much damage because of the shields they’re carrying.) Where the path first forks, head east and then south to find some Flour, Mana Herbs, and a Sacred Spring that grants extra HP. This floor’s battles are a mixture of Gold Knights, Dread Fighters, Barons, Arcanists, and Witches… and if you’re not careful, you run the risk of accidentally engaging two detachments of enemies at once as you wander the floor’s halls. Once you’ve finished this battle, you can move on to the third floor. If you can’t bring down the dragons with just magic attacks, you can also have the Dread Fighters chip away at their health they won’t do as much damage, but their speed should ensure they’ll get two hits to every Necrodragon bite. Have Leon and Conrad focus on the Gargoyles flanking the chamber, while your Sages/Priestesses/Celica pummel the Necrodragons with Seraphim. The end-of-floor battle here is another tough fight: two level 8 Necrodragons and a level 15 Necrodragon are surrounded by a Level 8 Bow Knight and four level 15 Gargoyles. When you come to the stairs leading to the next floor, you’ll see a Necrodragon at the landing to the stairs before you face it, turn around and drink from the water of skill at the Sacred Spring behind you. Continue westward and south along the path stop in the small room as you make your way south and drink from the Sacred Spring to revive all unit fatigue. Head north and break the wall to the east inside you’ll find Mana Herbs, Wine, and a chest with a Cog inside. You’ll come across some barrels containing Wine. Run westward along the path in front of you.
